In order to further strengthen the United States agricultural sector, and to combat the growing threat of climate change, President Joe Biden recently released his plan for rural America.
Many policies are referenced in this plan, but some of the most notable are the policies regarding agriculture. Although it may not always seem like it, the United States runs on the work of our rural farmers. They are responsible for getting food to our grocery stores and tables and, as was recently brought to light during the pandemic, a lack of farmers means a lack of food.
President Biden aims to strengthen rural farmers abilities to do their important work by doing things like pursuing trade policies that work for them, supporting beginning farmers, and supporting the development of regional food supply chains.
Perhaps most importantly, the President's plan aims to make it so that American agriculture is the first in the world to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. To do this, the President intends to partner with the farmers themselves to find ways to accelerate the cutting down of greenhouse gas emissions and expand the Conservation Stewardship Program, a program that is focused on giving payments to farmers based on their practices that go toward protecting the environment.
Corporations and foundations that are interested in offsetting their environmental impact are also encouraged to donate to the program in order to further fund it. This will go a long way toward combating climate change and creating a better environment for future generations.
